We go beyond organic incorporating management intensive grazing methods. Our goal is to provide a gourmet quality, healthy alternative to industrialized food.
Grass fed & finished Beef
During the grazing season our cows are moved every day to fresh pasture with a variety of grasses and legumes. The cattle are given free choice Fertrell beef balancer minerals (organic mineral supplement), Redmond natural trace mineral salt (OMRI certified) and Organic North Atlantic Sea Kelp. Their water source and minerals are brought to them in each new paddock.
Genetics are essential in a grass fed beef operation; on this topic we did extensive research before starting our herd. Certain breeds were better than others for grass fed beef. But just as important was the size of the beast. A medium size or smaller cow would perform far superior to larger cows on grass. You could have two Angus cows one bred to be huge and fed corn in the feed lot and one of a smaller frame score the cow with the smaller frame score would out perform his larger counterpart on grass every time.
This led us to the world renowned Wye Angus Program at The University of Maryland. Wye Angus is one of the most comprehensive beef cattle performance evaluation programs in the United States. One hundred percent of the cattle genetics at Brookside Farm come from the Wye Angus Herd.
